How Clean is your A/C Filter and Why You Should Care

Your a/c filter does more than collect dust and dirt.

When was the last time your air conditioning filter was changed?

Do you change your filter every few months or is the time between changes longer?

Some Extended Life filters can last longer between changes but most a/c filters should be changed at least every 60-90 days.

So, how do you know when it is time to change your a/c filter? A visual inspection is the easiest way to know when it is time to change your filter.

Remove your a/c filter and hold it up to the light, if you cannot see through it, you see dust, dirt or it looks dingy and dirty, it is time to replace the filter.

You will probably need to change your a/c filter more often if:

  • You have pets as many shed and/or have dander.
  • Anyone living in your home has allergies, changing your filter every 30 days will help control allergens (you may want to use a hepa filter).
  • You are doing any remodeling projects in your home as extra dust and debris may get into the air.
  • Someone in your home is a smoker.

Changing your air conditioner’s filter on a regular basis not only helps improve the air quality in your home but also helps your a/c unit last longer.

A dirty a/c filter reduces air flow which puts a strain on your a/c unit which causes it to wear out sooner.

When you purchase new a/c filters, it is a good idea to buy a few extra so you will have them on hand when it is time to change your filter.

When you check your a/c filter and see it needs to be changed, you will be able to change it immediately as you will not have to wait until you purchase a new one at the store.

A routine maintenance plan which includes changing your a/c filter regularly will help improve the air quality in your home, plus extend the life of you a/c unit.

If you are told you need a new a/c unit, contact RDS Air Conditioning as we can often make repairs to your existing unit to keep it running and save you money.
