Not Feeling Well? Maybe Your Workplace is to Blame!

If you have been suffering at work – this may be the cause.

Most of us go to work everyday and there are a large variety of workplace settings.

Each workplace has its unique environment but one thing they probably all have in common is allergens.

Anything from pesticides to solvents and cleaners to harmful gases and mold spores can be lurking in your work environment.

Although you may not be able to see these things all around you, they can still be there and affect your health.

Did you know that if a co-worker owns a pet, they can bring the pet’s dander to work with them and then you become exposed to it.

If you experience a stuffy nose, dizziness, headaches, burning/itchy eyes, sore throat, fatigue or other symptoms, allergens in your workplace could be the cause.

Clients or customers who visit your workplace to do business can also be affected by allergens lurking there.

So, what can be done to help improve and keep the air quality in your workplace as free as possible from allergens and contaminants?

Here are some tips:

  • Make sure your workplace is well ventilated
  • Have regular maintenance done to your air conditioning system/s
  • Quickly address any leaks, dampness or high humidity
  • Cleaning people should use environmentally and people friendly cleaning products when cleaning your workplace
  • Have an air purifier installed to reduce odors, air pollutants, VOCs (chemical odors), smoke, mold bacteria and viruses

Providing an allergen free workplace for your employees can result in better productivity and less sick days used plus clients or customers will be able to breathe easy when visiting your business.

Is the Air in your Workplace Making you Sick?

5 Sep

If you own a business, you should consider the people who visit your business including yourself, employees, customers, service techs, other business people, friends and family. How many of them may be affected by the environment in your building?

People with asthma, allergies and/or sensitivities can experience congestion, itchy eyes, runny nose, difficulty breathing or other aggravating symptoms.

There are all types of odors, air pollutants, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), smoke, mold, bacteria and viruses that you probably may not even know exist in your business environment. Walls, furniture, mold and carpets are just some of the things that can be emitting these into your environment.

Employees who have allergies or are sensitive to something in their work environment may miss more days of work or be less productive because they do not feel well and/or are dealing with irritating symptoms.

There are things you can do to help keep your employees, customers and anyone with allergies or sensitivities more comfortable while spending time at your place of business.

1. Use non VOC paint on walls or anyplace where paint is used.
2. Place Eco Friendly furniture in your workplace for employees to use and in your customer waiting area.
3. Install chemical free carpeting or green flooring like cork, natural linoleum or non glued laminate.
4. Have your a/c unit maintained and duct work cleaned.
5. Have an Air Knight REME air purification system installed in your place of business.

The Air Knight REME is designed to help eliminate sick building syndrome by reducing odors, air pollutants, VOCs (chemical odors), smoke, mold bacteria and viruses. The Air Knight REME is easily mounted into air conditioning and heating system air ducts where many sick building problems start.

Living with asthma, allergies or sensitivities is no fun and can be very irritating and debilitating. As an employer, it is important that your employees and visitors to your business feel comfortable and want to return often.

How Clean is your A/C Filter and Why You Should Care

Your a/c filter does more than collect dust and dirt.

When was the last time your air conditioning filter was changed?

Do you change your filter every few months or is the time between changes longer?

Some Extended Life filters can last longer between changes but most a/c filters should be changed at least every 60-90 days.

So, how do you know when it is time to change your a/c filter? A visual inspection is the easiest way to know when it is time to change your filter.

Remove your a/c filter and hold it up to the light, if you cannot see through it, you see dust, dirt or it looks dingy and dirty, it is time to replace the filter.

You will probably need to change your a/c filter more often if:

  • You have pets as many shed and/or have dander.
  • Anyone living in your home has allergies, changing your filter every 30 days will help control allergens (you may want to use a hepa filter).
  • You are doing any remodeling projects in your home as extra dust and debris may get into the air.
  • Someone in your home is a smoker.

Changing your air conditioner’s filter on a regular basis not only helps improve the air quality in your home but also helps your a/c unit last longer.

A dirty a/c filter reduces air flow which puts a strain on your a/c unit which causes it to wear out sooner.

When you purchase new a/c filters, it is a good idea to buy a few extra so you will have them on hand when it is time to change your filter.

When you check your a/c filter and see it needs to be changed, you will be able to change it immediately as you will not have to wait until you purchase a new one at the store.

A routine maintenance plan which includes changing your a/c filter regularly will help improve the air quality in your home, plus extend the life of you a/c unit.

If you are told you need a new a/c unit, contact RDS Air Conditioning as we can often make repairs to your existing unit to keep it running and save you money.
