Learn the Link Between Disease and the Temperature in your Home or Business

New research is showing how with the touch of a button, you can improve your health.

Many of us here in Southwest Florida are concerned about our health so we try to eat right, exercise and reduce stress. You don’t often hear about your environment being part of this healthy living equation.

There are some health conditions that are prevalent in our society like heart disease, diabetes, stroke and some forms of cancer. According to NIH (National Instituites of Health) metabolic syndrome is the name for a group of risk factors that raises your risk for heart disease and other health problems (such as diabetes, stroke and some forms of cancer).

Metabolic risk factors include:

  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Triglyceride levels (type of fat found in the blood)
  • Low HDL (good cholesterol)
  • A Large Waistline (apple shape)
  • High Fasting Blood Sugar

As human beings, we naturally produce about 100 watts of heat energy just from our basic body processes like pumping blood, digesting, breathing, and bio chemical reactions.  As mammals, our bodies can maintain a comfortable core temperature of 98.6 F (unlike reptiles who are the same temperature as the air around them).

The average adult’s thermoneutral zone (most comfortable temperature) in a climate controlled environment like one with air conditioning is 64.4 – 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit. This means within this temperature range, the average healthy adult body can still maintain their core temperature without needing assistance (warmer clothing etc).

Many of us spend our time either at home or in a building working where our environmental temperatures are usually set by a thermostat to a temperature that is comfortable and constant (it doesn’t change).

New research shows a link between metabolic syndrome diseases and a comfortable constant environmental temperature. When the human body stays in a thermoneutral environment the body needs to produce little heat to maintain core temperature.

There is a positive link between fluctuating environmental temperatures (throughout the day) and metabolic syndrome. Slightly increasing temperatures in winter and decreasing them in summer just outside of our comfort zone, can have positive affects on our metabolic health and when coupled with diet, exercise, proper sleep, exercise etc, our overall health.

Having a programmable thermostat installed in your home or business will allow you the flexibility to program temperatures in different areas (zones) in your home or business.

Common Summer A/C Issues that Can Affect Your Business

27 Apr

Regular a/c maintenance can help deflect a potential disaster for your business.

A commercial business heavily depends on its air conditioning system, especially during summer months, to keep its employees and customers cool and comfortable.

As a business owner, you usually have no control over how many windows are in your establishment plus these windows tend to be large.

So, your a/c system has to work harder to keep the building cool.

Use these tips to save money on the cost of cooling your business:

  • Have your thermostat checked – Although your thermostat may appear to be working, it may not be working efficiently so ask your a/c contractor to check it out. An inefficient thermostat can cost you hundreds of dollars each year.
  • Change your a/c filter regularly – If your a/c unit is running continuously, your filter may have to be changed as much as 3 times per year for proper air quality and to help keep your air conditioning unit running efficiently.
  • Regular maintenance – Scheduling regular maintenance for your a/c unit will ensure it is working properly. If your compressor starts to drag, your a/c unit will have to work harder which will cost you more in cooling costs. Also, to reduce the risk of shorts in your electrical system and for increased safety, regular a/c maintenence is important.
  • Inside and outside must be maintained – Both, the inside and outside parts of your a/c system need regular maintenance to keep the whole system running efficiently. The outside part (condensor) can accumulate dirt and debris from being outside all of the time and parts needs regular cleaning which are completed during a maintenance visit.

If you notice an increase in your electric bill, it is a big possibility that there is something going on with your a/c unit.

How Humidity Affects You and Your Home – What You Can Do…

23 Aug
humidity in your home

What is humidity? How it affects you and what you can do.

You’ve all heard of the old adage, “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.”

In certain areas of the country, including Southwest Florida, humidity is at a record high.

What is humidity? Simply, it is a quantity representing the amount of water vapor in the air.

Humidity is measured in two ways:

1) Absolute humidity:

The percentage of water vapor actually present in the air.

2) Relative humidity:

Divided by the amount of water that could be present in the air, plus temperature.

Often expressed by weathermen, relative humidity of air is a function of both water content and temperature, expressed in percents.

In more simple terms, how comfortable you feel, in regards to how the temperature relates to that vapor.

Humidity and Air Conditioning

Air conditioners function to cool homes by removing heat and moisture from the air. When humidity levels are excessive, they have to work significantly harder.

That means a/c wear and tear, and higher electric bills.  Plus, you just don’t feel comfortable.

Common Signs of High Humidity in your Home

What are the signs?

* Actually, your skin will give you a clue – Does your skin feel moist or “clammy”? It is a key sign of high humidity.

* Feeling warmer than it should – Ideally, the thermostat in a home should be set between 71 and 78 degrees. This is optimal in terms of comfort and cost. However, this range won’t produce truly comfortable results if humidity levels fall below 50 percent.

* Foggy windows – When humidity is present, it is due to vaporized water in the air. When it becomes bottled up in your home, it may fog up the windows.

* A musty odor – Excessive humidity causes dampness around the home, something you CAN smell.

Damages from Humidity

Mold and mildew thrive in high humidity. and can cause costly damage to furniture, electronics, cabinets and more.

Air Conditioners and Cooling Capacity

Bigger isn’t always better. People often assume that the larger and more powerful an air conditioner, the more effectively it is in cooling and controlling humidity.

That’s not necessarily true. If your air conditioner’s capacity is much larger than needed, it won’t be able to remove moisture as effectively and humidity levels will remain high.

Why? More powerful air conditioners don’t need to run as much, so they don’t get a chance to remove as much moisture from the air. This is why it’s crucial to buy an air conditioner that suits your home.

Servicing your air conditioning unit is critical to battling humidity. At minimum, filters should be changed monthly, an easy do-it-yourself. Full services should be yearly or bi-annually, and can be set up with maintenance agreements that will save you money in utility costs and help you battle humidity.

RDS Air Conditioning specializes in checking and servicing a/c units and is expert at installation, maintenance and repair. Maintenance Agreements are semi-annual and affordable.  RDS even offers an A/C Protection Plan.  Serving Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero and Fort Myers.

Seasonal Resident? Keep Mold Away While You are Away!

Keep Mold Away While You Are Away

Mold can be a problem especially in tropical climates like we have in Southwest Florida. Many of our residents are part time and live in their Southwest Florida home only during winter months.

Our rainy season lasts 6 months (May thru October) and this is the time of year when there is the most potential for mold growth in your home.

If there is only a small amount of mold, you may not notice it until large mold colonies have grown and spread through your home.

Also, it is not always easy to recognize mold as there are different types of mold: Clusters of small black spots, white and thread like, gray green color, gray brown color, orange color, purple color, pink color, and white color mold.

One of the big reasons mold can grow in your home is from condensation. Condensation happens when there is high humidity in your home. During the long rainy season when there is a lot of rain and hot muggy days, condensation then mold is more likely to occur.

The moisture created from condensation provides a medium for mold to grow.

You may not know mold is in your home especially if it is just starting to grow but you may experience physical symptoms from being exposed to the mold.

Do you have bouts of sneezing, runny nose, sore eyes or nasal congestion? Do you feel better when you are outside of your home? If so, mold could be the culprit. You may smell a “moldy odor” in your home even if you do not see any mold (but it is still there).

A great way to keep mold from forming in your home is to control the humidity. This can be challenging when you are only home part of the year. There is a great thermostat that features a built in humidistat that will kick in when it senses the drop in humidity.

The Homeywell Vision Pro 8000 will help reduce the incidence of mold and also saves you money with electric because you will not have to set your a/c unit as high.

Mold spreads quickly and when you are away from your home for long periods of time especially during the rainy season, you could return to a mold nightmare.

Having a thermostat with a built in humidistat like the Honeywell Vision Pro 8000 installed in your home can give you peace of mind while you are away.

Some features of the Honeywell Vision Pro 8000:

  • Effortless, Menu-Driven Programming – Simplifies programming by responding to your choices
  • 7-Day Programming – Allows separate programming for each day
  • Large, Clear Backlit Digital Display – Easy-to-read in various lighting conditions
  • Change/Check Reminders – Let you know when to service or replace filters, batteries, etc.
  • Precise Comfort Control – Maintains consistent comfort to the highest level of accuracy
  • Built-In Humidity Sensor – Displays current humidity and select models allows you to control dehumidification
  • Real-Time Clock – Keeps time during power failures and automatically updates for daylight savings
  • Multiple HOLD Options – Allows you to override the program schedule as desired, with temporary and vacation hold settings.

Do You Know What Happens if Lightning Strikes Anywhere Near Your A/C Unit?

25 Sep
lightning and your a/c unit

Florida is well known for its lightning storms. Is your a/c unit protected?

Living in Florida is great as we have the perfect weather in fall and winter, summers are hot but many people are a close drive to the beach and you can always find a pool to “cool off” in.

Another thing that goes along with living in a tropical climate is storms. Florida is well known for having rain storms with lots of thunder and lightning.

Last year in Southwest Florida there were over 330,000 lightning strikes. Lightning as it streaks across the sky can be exciting to watch but lightning can also cause damage to electronics, appliances and even to your air conditioner.

A power surge can damage your a/c unit’s compressor, burn wires and fry the fan motor. A lightning strike does not have to hit your a/c unit directly to cause damage. A nearby lightning strike can damage your a/c unit.

Often, in cooler winter weather people in Southwest Florida will turn their a/c unit off and open the slider or windows to enjoy the cooler air. When lightning damages an air conditioner during this time, the owner may not find out there is a problem for a few weeks if they have not been running their a/c unit.

A good way to prevent power surge damage to your a/c unit that can be costly to repair is to have a surge protector installed on your air conditioner. A surge protector will protect your a/c unit from power surges during a storm.

Many people have a busy life and having a surge protector installed now will give you peace of mind as it will be one less thing you have to think about when a storm hits and creates a power surge.

Call RDS Air Conditioning to have a surge protector installed to protect your air conditioner from power surges.

If you haven’t had your a/c unit checked in awhile, RDS Air Conditioning has an affordable maintenance package to get your air conditioner tuned up and ready for the season.
