Bet You Didn’t Know that Common Dust and Dirt Can Cause this to Happen…

20 Oct
Before and after of a dirty and clean air conditioner

Maintenance and a clean unit = Better cooling/heating and a longer life for your a/c unit.

Dust and dirt is something that if you found in your home, you would probably clean it up right away. Dust and dirt are not always visible especially when it comes to your air conditioning unit.

Did you know that from your air conditioner running, dust and dirt accumulate in certain areas inside that affect its efficiency?

If left alone, this dust and dirt buildup can cause your a/c unit to lose at least 5% of its efficiency each year. This means a dirty air conditioning unit will not keep your home as cool plus it must work harder to do its job.

You may not even know that your a/c unit is in need of cleaning until it becomes less efficient, you notice your home is not as cool, your electric bill increases or your unit breaks down.

Having your a/c system cleaned and maintained regularly will increase the life of your air conditioning unit and save money on your electric bill because it will be running much more efficiently.

Regular cleaning and maintenance also includes changing your air conditioner’s filter. A helpful tip is to use a permanent marker and put the date on a new a/c filter when you change it out then going forward make sure to change it on time (when you hold the filter up to the light and can’t see through it or it starts to look dingy and dirty). When you keep track of  the dates for a few months, you will have an idea of how
often your filter needs changing.

Most people don’t know exactly how much time there is between filter changes. Keeping track for a few filter changes will let you know exactly how often you need to change your filter and then keep changing it on time to help extend the life of your a/c unit and keep it running efficiently.

Your home or business environment (if you have pets or are in a high traffic area etc…) will dictate how often your filter needs to be changed. If you need hard to find filters for your a/c unit, when you find a place that sells your type of filter, stock up so you will have them on hand for when your filter needs changing.

If you are a seasonal resident returning to Southwest Florida, your a/c unit probably has been running all summer long and is now in need of cleaning and maintenance.

RDS Air Conditioning has been cleaning, maintaining, repairing and installing air conditioning units in SWFL for many years. Give us a call today and we will service your a/c unit.

Tips to Get your A/C Unit Ready for Summer 2015

If your a/c unit breaks down at your home or business, in this heat, you will be very uncomfortable

Summer is just around the corner but we are already experiencing temperatures in the 90’s so your a/c unit is very important for keeping
you cool and comfortable.

If something goes wrong during this intense heat, inside your home or business can become extremely hot and uncomfortable very quickly.

Use these tips to ensure your air conditioner continues to cool your home or business during the summer heat and all year long as well.

Keep filters clean or replace them each month or every three months. If there is a lot of dust in your home (ie, you live near a high construction area or you have pets that shed often), you may have to change them more like every month.

Have the condenser coils and fan cleaned as they tends to accumulate dirt, pollen and debris due to them being located outside all year long. Dirty condenser coils will make your air conditioner run less efficiently, increase your energy bill and can cause your a/c unit to break down.

Remove any leaves, mulch, branches or other debris that may accumulate around the base of your a/c unit which will block air flow and cause your air conditioner to work harder plus diminish the life of your a/c unit.

Have the coolant lines checked because if there is any damage or leaks, coolant can leak out and will cause the air coming into your home or business from your a/c unit to be warmer than it should.

Have a test run on your a/c unit to make sure it is functioning properly and all components are in working order to ensure continuous cooling without a breakdown.

Also, if you are told you need a new air conditioning system, call us at RDS Air Conditioning as we can often get your current a/c unit working again to stave off the big expense of purchasing a new a/c unit.

Many people are engaging in outside activities all summer long and it is a huge inconvenience when you go indoors to cool off and there is no cool air in your home due to a/c trouble.

Having your air conditioning unit serviced and maintained on a regular basis will help your a/c system last longer, avoid a breakdown, run more efficiently and reduce costs on your energy bill.

Warning! Before You Let Anyone Repair, Perform Maintenance on or Install your New A/C Unit, You Must Read This!

a/c repair

Don’t spend unnecessary money on your a/c unit

Every a/c unit, sometime during the life of the unit, will require repair, maintenance and eventually replacement but what matters most when having a new air conditioning system installed or current unit repaired or maintained?

Here are some considerations:

Your existing ductwork – Is your ductwork adequate to accept a new a/c unit or does it need to be redone? Is the ductwork properly insulated and/or is there damage to the ducts?

The size of your home vs size of the a/c unit – An a/c system should match the size of your home. For example, if an air conditioning system is too large for your home, you will be spending much more on your energy bill then necessary.

Improper Use – Are you using your a/c unit correctly to save energy? Is it running all of the time? Are you using the correct filter/s?

Proper Control – Do you have control over your a/c unit? Does your thermostat allow for you to control the timing of the temperature? For example, if you will be out all evening, can you raise the thermostat to 78 then set the timer to decrease the temperature a few minutes before you return home or control the temperature from an ipad or phone?

Maintenance – Even after having a new a/c unit installed, it is important to continue with regular maintenance to keep your new air conditioning unit running at top performance.

Repair – Is the company repairing your a/c unit reputable? Will they only tell you what is actually needed to complete the repair?

The person installing your new a/c unit – There are a variety of a/c brands to choose from but when deciding on a new air conditioning system beside the brand you choose, who installs your new a/c unit is just as important.

If the person installing your new air conditioner, repairing or performing maintenance is not a licensed certified contractor then you are putting yourself at risk for potential problems and probably paying more than is necessary to install, repair or maintain your a/c unit.

RDS Air Conditioning is a Certified Florida Contractor – Lic.# CAC1816713 and has a great reputation installing new a/c systems plus repairing and maintaining a/c systems for residential and small commercial customers.
