RDS Air Conditioning, Goldilocks and the Three Bears – The Story You Never Heard Before

RDS, Goldilocks and the three bears

A fun A/C story

Do you remember the story about Goldilocks who wandered through the forest for a walk one day? After a very long walk she came upon the home of three bears and as she entered both tired and hungry from her long walk she discovered some porridge, chairs and beds.

Well, nobody ever heard about the air conditioner system in the three bears home, so I thought I’d share how I recall hearing the story.

Goldilocks noticed three bowls of porridge on the table and as she sat down she discovered one was too hot, another was too cold and then some porridge that “was just right!”. She enjoyed the porridge and then she wanted to take a load off and noticed three chairs nearby.

She sat on the first chair and exclaimed it was too big for her and as she jumped off she made her way to the second chair and found it also to be too big for her but alas the third chair she tried “was just right!”.

She enjoyed a little relaxation and the effects of the long walk and now her full belly was making her very tired so she looked around for somewhere to take a nap and as she made her way upstairs she noticed three beds.

Goldilocks laid down on the first bed and proclaimed “this bed is too hard” so she made her way over to the second bed and found it too soft but the third bed (you guessed it) “was just right!”.

Well, the three bears came home and this is when you thought the story ended as they discovered their place inhabited by Goldilocks but what about their air conditioning unit?

As Goldilocks was earlier trying to adjust the A/C unit she discovered it was not capable of providing her the proper level of comfort she needed after her long and tiring walk through the forest and what you never heard before was the three bears had left because it was just too hot to bear (sorry) with their home being so uncomfortable!

So, before being escorted off the property, Goldilocks called RDS Air Conditioning and we arrived at the home to help the three bears with selecting their new A/C system that would be “just right!”.

The proper system can’t be too large or too small (tonnage). They wouldn’t benefit from higher efficiency if the unit isn’t properly sized (SEER ratings). The duct-work must also be just right and work in concert with the rest of the system (static pressures / system air resistance).

When RDS Air Conditioning was done at “The Bears” home they had a new indoor and outdoor unit installed which “was just right!”

Call us today (239-313-9174) if you feel something just isn’t right about you’re A/C system and RDS Air Conditioning will make it “just right”.

10 ways to keep cool when going to sleep if you have no air conditioner

Nothing beats an a/c unit working at full capacity…but if you are ever caught in the heat with no a/c these tips can help you stay cool.

Central air is a beautiful thing…Push a button and your home cools down rather quickly. But… What happens when you have no a/c unit or one that is broken?

How can you keep cool in the sweltering heat?

Here are 10 ways to keep cool if you have no a/c:

1. Buy a hot water bottle, fill with water, freeze, then keep the water bottle close by to stay cool all night.

2. Use cotton sheets on your bed plus wear loose fitting cotton pajamas as both promote ventilation.

3. Use a damp sheet or towel as a blanket.

4. Sleep alone. When you sleep next to another person their body generates heat which will only make you feel hotter.

5. Drink water before going to bed to stay hydrated.

6. Take a cool shower before bed which will wash away sweat and reduce your core body temperature so you can go to sleep feeling nice and cool.

7. Keep the lights off to reduce heat in the room.

8. Hang a wet sheet in front of an open window so as the breeze blows through, it will cool down the room.

9. Sleep on a bamboo mat or straw bed as these raw materials do not retain heat.

10. Buy an air conditioner or have your broken a/c unit fixed.

If you are tired of dealing with the heat or an a/c unit that isn’t cooling properly or would like to upgrade from your current air conditioning unit, there are some things to consider before deciding to purchase a new a/c unit.

Make sure you really need an new a/c system. Often, your current a/c unit can be repaired to help you put off the expense of buying a new one.

RDS Air Conditioning can often repair your existing a/c unit and if a new system is needed, will help you choose the most cost effective and proper air conditioning system to fit your needs.

Don’t spend unnecessary money on your a/c unit

Every a/c unit, sometime during the life of the unit, will require repair, maintenance and eventually replacement but what matters most when having a new air conditioning system installed or current unit repaired or maintained?

Here are some considerations:

Your existing ductwork – Is your ductwork adequate to accept a new a/c unit or does it need to be redone? Is the ductwork properly insulated and/or is there damage to the ducts?

The size of your home vs size of the a/c unit – An a/c system should match the size of your home. For example, if an air conditioning system is too large for your home, you will be spending much more on your energy bill then necessary.

Improper Use – Are you using your a/c unit correctly to save energy? Is it running all of the time? Are you using the correct filter/s?

Proper Control – Do you have control over your a/c unit? Does your thermostat allow for you to control the timing of the temperature? For example, if you will be out all evening, can you raise the thermostat to 78 then set the timer to decrease the temperature a few minutes before you return home or control the temperature from an ipad or phone?

Maintenance – Even after having a new a/c unit installed, it is important to continue with regular maintenance to keep your new air conditioning unit running at top performance.

Repair – Is the company repairing your a/c unit reputable? Will they only tell you what is actually needed to complete the repair?

The person installing your new a/c unit – There are a variety of a/c brands to choose from but when deciding on a new air conditioning system beside the brand you choose, who installs your new a/c unit is just as important.

If the person installing your new air conditioner, repairing or performing maintenance is not a licensed certified contractor then you are putting yourself at risk for potential problems and probably paying more than is necessary to install, repair or maintain your a/c unit.

RDS Air Conditioning is a Certified Florida Contractor – Lic.# CAC1816713 and has a great reputation installing new a/c systems plus repairing and maintaining a/c systems for residential and small commercial customers.

Out With The Old and In With the New – A/C Unit

12 Mar

old and new a/c unitsMarch 20, 2015 is the first day of spring and summer is close behind.

For seasonal residents in Southwest Florida, this means that season 2015 is coming to an end and you will be returning to your summer homes very soon.

With summer comes high humidity and it is important that your a/c unit is running efficiently so that it will help keep your home at a cool temperature throughout the summer months while you are away.

New compressor technology and updated fan blade shapes make new a/c units less noisy and more energy efficient.

According to This Old House, twenty years ago, a typical system might use 6,000 watts of electricity per hour to cool an average-size house. Today, that same house can be cooled with as little as 1,710 watts per hour, an astounding 250-percent increase in operating efficiency.

When choosing a new air conditioning unit, purchase one with a SEER (seasonal energy-efficiency ratio) of at least 14. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient your new a/c unit will run which will result in lower electric bills.

10 Important Questions to Ask Yourself About Your Air Conditioning Unit

23 Jan
get rid of that old energy burning a/c unit

Only have a new air conditioner installed when you really need one but it is important to buy a new a/c unit at the right time as to not waste money on an old outdated model.

The 2015 SWFL winter season is in full swing. This year, winter runs from December 21 to March 19th.

While people who are staying north for the winter will be experiencing bitter cold and snow, SWFL will enjoy many warm sunny days.

Whether you live in Southwest Florida year round or are a seasonal resident, many of you will have your a/c unit running throughout the year.

The more your air conditioning unit runs, the higher your electric bill.

So, how can you efficiently keep your home cool all year long and still save money on your electric bill?

Start by taking a look at your current a/c unit and ask yourself these questions:

  1. How old is your a/c unit?
  2. Does your a/c unit get regular maintenance?
  3. How often do you change the filter/s in your a/c unit?
  4. Has your air conditioning unit had a major component failure?
  5. Does your a/c unit require frequent repairs?
  6. Does your a/c unit have to work harder to keep your home cool?
  7. Are your electric bills high?
  8. Does your a/c unit have frequent break downs?
  9. Is your a/c unit doing a good job of cooling your entire home?
  10. Are some rooms in your home cooler than others?

If your a/c unit is old and needs frequent repairs, has break downs, is not cooling your home consistently and you have high electric bills, it is probably time to have a newer more efficient unit installed.

Even if your current older a/c unit receives regular maintenance and you change the filters on time, it is using much more electricity than a newer more efficient model.

Replacing your current air conditioner is a big decision but according to FPL, when you upgrade your current outdated air conditioning unit to a new high efficiency model, you can save about $400.00 a year on your electric bill. That is considerable savings!

After you make the decision to purchase a new air conditioning unit there are some other things to consider:

  • What size a/c unit will you need?
  • What is the efficiency rating of the unit you will purchase?
  • What FPL rebates are available?

It is important to hire a Certified Licensed Florida contractor to install your new a/c unit to make sure the work is done correctly. They will also be able to answer all of your questions regarding the correct size unit you will need for your home or business, the efficiency rating and any rebates that are available through FPL.

RDS Air Conditioning specializes in everything to do with a/c units including installation, repair and maintenance. They have a geat reputation in SWFL with many home owners and business owners for providing excellent customer service at a fair price.

Think You Need to Buy a New A/C Unit? Don’t Get Hot Under the Collar, Keep Your Cool!

air conditioner

A new a/c unit is a big expense but don’t make that purchase until it is absolutely necessary.

June 21, 2014 is almost here and we will soon be enjoying the sweltering days of summer, or maybe not.

Most of us do not find comfort in 90 degree weather unless we are spending time at the beach or by the pool.

When you are home and your air conditioner either stops working or is not working properly, the heat from the lazy days of summer can become unbearable.

Replacing an air conditioning unit is a big expense but is eventually necessary as nothing lasts forever but before you purchase a new a/c unit, be sure the old one truly needs to be replaced.

Here are some signs that your current a/c unit may be ready to retire:

  • Temperature inconsistencies – Some rooms in your home are too warm while other rooms are too cold.
  • Your a/c unit is over 10 years old – The average life of an a/c unit is about 10-15 years.
  • Your electric bill is increasing – Your air conditioning unit is becoming less efficient.
  • Too much humidity in your home – Your a/c unit is probably not be working properly.
  • Excessive repairs – Your a/c unit keeps breaking down and needs frequent repairs.

At RDS Air Conditioning, we find that very often, an air conditioning unit can be repaired rather than replaced.

An honest and knowledgeable a/c service provider will tell you when it is time to get rid of your old a/c unit and install a new unit in your home and when it is not worth trying to make repairs.

Whenever you purchase a new air conditioning unit you can expect:

  • To save money right away. You will notice a decrease in your electric bill as an efficient running air conditioning unit uses less energy.
  • You will also notice that all rooms in your home will cool more evenly (as long as the duct work is correctly installed).
  • You will only have to concern yourself with changing the air filters and having your a/c unit maintained twice a year and not deal with break downs or worry about repairs.

Everyone who owns a home with an air conditioning unit and lives there for a length of time, will eventually have to purchase a new unit.

The key is in knowing when your a/c unit truly needs to be replaced or when a repair can hold off that purchase for another year or two. Don’t spend the extra money on a new a/c unit until it is truly necessary.

At RDS Air Conditioning we will never tell you to replace your a/c unit unless we feel it is absolutely necessary. We even offer an a/c protection plan to maintain your a/c unit and if it ever breaks down and needs to be replaced, we will reimburse the unused balance.
